The opening night of the European Film Days 2017 organised by the EU Info Centre in BiH, in cooperation with EUNIC and embassies of 10 EU Member States – Poland, Austria, France, Spain, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Greece, Romania, Italy and Germany, took place on 22 May at the Meeting Point Cinema in Sarajevo. This year’s film event features 10 European great film titles that have won highly-acclaimed awards in several national and international festivals, clustered around Europe Day (9 May).

Opening the European Film Days, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation in BiH Khaldoun Sinno noted that the EU accession process is not just about the law alignment and completing the questionnaire, but also about cultural exchange and promoting cultural diversity. “This year’s film festival is an excellent occasion to present the EU cultural diversity with screenings of interesting film titles contributed by EU Member States, reflecting the official slogan of the EU ‘united in diversity’. When referring to the film industry, BiH has been an equal member of Europe since it won an Oscar for the Best Foreign Language Film in 2002, which is not the case for all Member States”, said Deputy Head Sinno.

The festival was opened with the screening of the Polish film “Body“, directed by Malgorzata Szumowska, starring Janusz Gajos, May Ostaszewska and Justyna Suwa. Expressing his satisfaction to open this year’s film festival with a Polish film, Andrej Krawczyk, Ambassador of Poland to BiH introduced the film and its director, one the most significant contemporary directors, whose films have been nominated for the European Film Award as the “discovery of the year”. “The film to be screened tonight won the Silver Bear at the International Film Festival in Berlin, Golden Lion at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, as well as the prestigious audience award by the European Film Academy “, Ambassador Krawczyk concluded.

Cinema lovers of all ages will have the opportunity to enjoy the screenings of the best European films, running from 22 to 31 May at the Meeting Point Cinema, in the evening hours. The entrance is free and all the films are subtitled in both languages, B/C/S and English.
