World Tourism Day (WTD) is held annually on 27 September to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. The celebration seeks to address global challenges outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and to highlight the contribution the tourism sector can make in reaching these goals.

The theme for 2016 is “Tourism for All – promoting universal accessibility”, creating environments that can cater for the needs of all of us, whether we are traveling or staying at home. May that be due to a disability, even temporary, families with small children, or the ageing population, at some point in our lives, sooner or later, we all benefit of universal accessibility in tourism.

Europe is still the most visited region in the world with 51% of the total number of foreign tourists in the world, respectively 608 million and 451 billion dollars in tourism revenues.

In parts of Southern and Mediterranean Europe, which includes Bosnia and Herzegovina, there has been an increase in tourist visit of 5% of which Bosnia and Herzegovina, together with Albania, FYR Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia has recorded a double-digit improvement.

The official World Tourism Day 2016 celebrations will be held in Bangkok, Thailand.
