The EU Info Centre was too small this evening to accommodate all visitors at an exhibition titled “Women in the world of art”.  The exhibition was dedicated to women in the art world through the works of ten young BiH students from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo.

Several departments at the Academy were represented. Rebeka Abdagić from painting, Dalila Manso from sculpture, Ina Cano from digital graphics, Sabrina Beširević, Merjem Agić, Maša Čengić, Jasmin Spahić, Andrea Mirnić, Naida Lisica from product design, and Azra Hasković from restoration and conservation. The students’ original works represented the uniqueness of women through paintings, prints, sculptures, posters and accessories in order to encourage young artists in BiH to express their creativity and play an active role in society.

The exhibition was opened by Massimo Mina, Head of Operations for Social Development, Civil Society and Cross-Border Cooperation in the EU Delegation to BiH. On this occasion, he said: “In presenting the works of ten women whose work stands out in a variety of techniques, the European Union wants to point out the importance of equal participation of women and men in all aspects of economic and public life. Gender equality is important in terms of economic efficiency, cultural resources, social inclusion and social justice.”

He also pointed out that equality between women and men is one of the fundamental values of the European Union, and that the European Commission in 2015 adopted a new strategy on equality between women and men, and a new action plan for gender equality and empowerment of women.

“Bosnia and Herzegovina as a potential candidate country must fully embrace the fundamental principle of equality between women and men. Monitoring the transposition, application and enforcement of EU legislation in this area remains a high priority for BiH in the process of enlargement that EU financially supports,” said Mina.

The young artist Sabrina Beširević aimed to show the feminine side of creative art.

“The design, painting and shaping, the way of seeing and the inclusion of women’s individuality and all that it involves, was the main inspiration for the creation of my work,” said Sabrina Beširević.

A participant in the exhibition, Rebeka Abdagić, presented two images representing a reference to the prehistoric rituals of depicting women.

“In prehistoric times, the woman was head of the family and society, and in the period of matriarchy was respected as the most important member of the community. The motive of my paintings is an abstracted archetype of women, as a symbol of fertility and motherhood,” said Rebecca Abdagić.

All art lovers are welcome to the premises of the EU Info Centre in the EU Delegation to BiH building in Sarajevo (Skenderija 3a) to view the exhibition from 9 to 18 March 2015, from Monday to Friday 09:30 to 17:30 hours.

The EU Info Centre is a project funded by the European Union with the aim of increasing the knowledge of citizens of BiH on the EU, its programmes and policies, as well as on relations between BiH and the EU.
