EU Info Centre in Sarajevo organised original art performance on the occasion of the International Mother Language Day (21 February).

Young actress Alisa Čajić and Andrea Aković through a dance and music performance, conjured up the works of renowned poets of BiH, Aleksa Šantic, Mak Dizdar and Antun Branko Šimić and thus conveyed a clear message about the importance of celebrating Mother Language Day.

“Through the clash of egos in dance and sound, this performance evokes the words of great authors, and sends  wise messages and warnings. This exact message sends great Mak Dizdar, while Antun Branko Šimić is warning us”, said the young actress Alisa Čajić.

The aim of the event was to promote and encourage multilingualism, language culture, and language values as among the greatest treasures of mankind.

“It was a great pleasure to cooperate with the EU Info Centre. We wanted, through poetry and original performance, to reach out to people and take them for at least half an hour into another world. Judging by the applause at the end of the performance I believe that we were successful,” said Andrea Aković.

In order to highlight the protection and the importance of linguistic diversity and culture Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization of the United Nations (UNESCO) in 1999 proclaimed February 21 as International Mother Language Day.

The backbone of  cultural diversity of the European Union is multilingualism and respect for different cultures. Since July 1, 2013, the EU has 24 official and working languages.

The EU Info Centre is a project funded by the European Union and aims to increase understanding of the EU, its institutions, policies and programmes among BH citizens  as well as  relations between BiH and the EU.
